Replacing the coolant radiator of the car
Visually, the level control should be made with reference to the directions (maximum and minimum – MAX and MIN) reported on the transparent tank expansion, arranged in evidence in the upper part of the engine compartment and accessible simply by opening the bonnet. With the cold engine, the level must be between the two marks. It tends to come closer to the top notch (MAX) when the engine is too hot. Level restore is performed slowly after removing the cap on the expansion tank. To avoid the risk of burns, do it when the engine is not too hot.
At the frequency indicated in the booklet “use and maintenance” that came with your car, you must proceed to the complete replacement of the coolant of the engine. In fact, the coolant is a product that with time loses its properties (antifreeze, rust, etc.). Here’s how:
Supplied coolant is necessary. The product is sold in packs of 1 liter from auto parts stores, shopping malls and service stations. For the amount necessary consult the booklet “use and maintenance” in vehicle equipment.
System the car on a flat area, turn off the engine, engage first, pull the handbrake, wait for the engine to cool.
Remove the cap of the expansion chamber (in order to speed up the discharge of the liquid) and the eventual drain plug in the lower part of the radiator. Drops the liquid in a container. In the absence of the drain plug, disconnecting from the radiator sleeve that brings the water to the engine block (the lowest point), after loosening the clamp with a screwdriver.
Once the circuit is completely emptied, screwed again the drain plug or reattach the sleeve (provided by tightening the clamp), referred to in the previous step, open the vent valve and pour the liquid into the radiator from the expansion chamber. For cars of older generation devoid of the vent valve, during the operation, with one hand pours one after another, the packaging of liquid in the expansion tank and with the other alternately press and leaves the sleeve of rubber, in order to avoid the formation of air bubbles in the circuit, that influence proper water circulation.
When the liquid in the expansion tank reaches the proper level (between min and max), close the vent valve and the reservoir cap. To verify that the transaction has been completed correctly and that the circuit is not present air bubbles, put the car ignition on and wait for the temperature reaches about 90 degree C and make sure the cooling fan come into regular service. Pay attention to the fact that, if the thermostatic valve was connected to the motor instead of the radiator, the fan enters regularly in function, even if the coolant does not circulate perfectly, but instead of decreasing the temperature tends to go up.
Useful information and advice
The radiator of almost all of the next-generation car does not provide the filler plug. The refilling and replacement of the liquid takes place through the expansion chamber, while for the discharge disconnecting the sleeve.
The positioning of the vent valve is not always the same for all cars. In any case, it is placed in one of the highest points of the circuit (if necessary, consult the booklet “Use and Maintenance”).
However, is discharged coolant (plug removal, disconnection sleeve), the circuit never be drained completely, but it is a normal thing.
