The company has in fact received U.S. $ 75 million from NASA to equip its Dragon space capsule for a new security system.
Contrary to all systems since the beginning of the conquest of space, that imagined by the company SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corporation) will be incorporated into the vessel. It would replace the very heavy tower rescue (solid rocket miniature), which allows to remove the capsule containing the astronauts of the rocket during the first two minutes after launch.
The U.S. $ 75 million is part of the 270 million that NASA grants to various private operators competing to develop the shuttle ship replacement. Other contenders include Boeing, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and Blue Origin.
In this race, SpaceX seems to have an edge. On December 8, 2010, successfully launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, a first copy of Dragon in space. The capsule had completed two orbits around the Earth before landing in the Pacific in three parachutes.
